The medical term for Children’s podiatry is ‘Podopaediatrics.’ Podopaediatrics is an area of podiatry focussing on the treatment of children and the various conditions that can affect a young person’s lower limbs.
Common conditions that affect children are:
All children’s appointments must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Children generally fall into two categories in podiatry.
Firstly, those with skin and nail conditions such as verrucae, warts, fungal infections and ingrown nails. In these cases, they often require a number of treatments to resolve the problem.
Secondly, children with gait (walking, running) complaints would be assessed first and the complaint often corrected with orthosis (prescription insoles) and home physical therapy. This generally requires 2-3 appointments.
In both cases you will be advise of the expected number of treatments and cost at the initial appointment.
We understand that children can be very nervous when they visit our clinics, which is why we take our time to explain who we are, what we do and how we do it.
We make every effort to treat children in a relaxed pain free manor, however some treatments can be a little uncomfortable. In these cases we reassure the child and explain how it will feel and that it won’t last long.
Once we have gained their trust, we find children can be better patients than some adults.
